How to spend a weekend in Coupeville: Whidbey Island weekend itinerary

Whidbey Island Coupeville

How to get to Coupeville, Washington

There are a few ways to reach Coupeville, depending on where you’re coming from:

  • From Seattle: From Seattle there are two ways to get to Coupeville: by ferry, or by driving. To arrive by ferry you will take the Mukilteo to Clinton route. It’s a short ride and offers beautiful views of the Sound. From Clinton, you’ll drive north to Coupeville. You can also drive to Whidbey Island in order to get to Coupeville. If you choose to drive the whole way you’ll drive north and cross over Deception Pass, which is a historic bridge with dramatic swirling currents below.
  • From the Olympic Peninsula: Hop on the Port Townsend to Coupeville ferry. This route drops you right into the heart of Coupeville. From the ferry stop, you’ll drive about 10 minutes north to Coupeville.

The best time of year to visit Coupeville and Whidbey Island

Thanks to its coastal location, Coupeville enjoys mild weather year-round, making it a great destination in any season. However, I especially like fall on Whidbey Island because the temperatures are still mild, the summer crowds are gone, and the fall colors are lovely.

Winters are the coldest time to visit Whidbey Island, with average highs in the mid forties (Fahrenheit). August is the warmest, with temperatures typically reaching the upper 60s. Rain is most common in November through January. We visited in September and experienced a mix of sun, clouds, and wind.

Travel tip: No matter what time of year you visit Coupeville and Whidbey Island, I recommend packing a rain jacket! We’re huge fans of the REI XeroCloud rain jacket (for women and men). These rain jackets are lightweight, breathable, and– most importantly– waterproof!

Where to stay in Coupeville on Whidbey Island

Whidbey Island Coupeville Vail's View lodging airbnb with kitchen

Coupeville has several excellent options for accommodations. We booked a cozy vacation rental called Vail’s View. Located right on Coupeville’s historic Front Street, I highly recommend this cozy rental! It’s perched above an adorable wine bar and has a deck that overlooks the water.

We spent mornings at Vail’s View watching seabirds dive for fish, and evenings sipping wine on the deck as the tide rolled in. The bed was super comfy, and the kitchen was perfect for making homemade meals with local ingredients. Vail’s View was within easy walking distance of many of the shops and restaurants in town, making it a perfect base for exploring the best things to do in Coupeville, from waterfront strolls to nearby hikes and scenic drives around Whidbey Island.

If you’re looking for more traditional hotel accommodations I recommend booking a room at the Anchorage Inn, which is also conveniently located downtown.

Coupeville weekend itinerary: the best things to do in Coupeville

Whidbey Island Coupeville

I hope you love Coupeville as much as we do! Below you’ll find a two day itinerary for a weekend in Coupeville, Washington. The itinerary includes our favorite things to eat, see, and do in and around town. This guide for how to spend a weekend in Coupeville is family-friendly, but it’s also perfect for couples and individuals without kids!

Coupeville itinerary, day one: exploring the waterfront and Ebey’s Landing

Enjoy a leisurely morning getting to the island by ferry, or by driving over Deception Pass. If you arrive earlier, I recommend grabbing breakfast and coffee at Sunshine Drip before diving into the itinerary below!

Spend a morning exploring Coupeville’s Historic Waterfront and downtown

Whidbey Island Coupeville historic downtown

Coupeville’s Historic Front Street is full of charm and history. This is where the movie Practical Magic was filmed, and you may recognize the red building on the wharf from the movie. Front Street is only a few blocks long, with about a dozen adorable shops, perfect for window shopping.

Some of our favorite stores in Coupeville include:

  • Kingfisher Bookstore – a cozy, family-owned store with a great selection of books.
  • A Touch of Dutch – full of European imports and treats.
  • The Crow’s Roost – specializing in art, home goods, and gifts.

I also recommend walking out on the public dock to the Coupeville Wharf for a chance to spot orcas, and take in the views. If you spot a whale, make sure to ring the bell at the end of the dock to alert others in the area! On Saturdays you can also visit the Coupeville Farmers Market

Take a short afternoon stroll through Price Sculpture Forest

Whidbey Island Coupeville Price Sculpture Forest Free activities on whidbey island

From Coupeville drive five minutes down the road to the Price Sculpture Forest. A short trail winds through a forest, where you can observe a variety of art installations and sculpture.

This peaceful walk is a perfect spot for the whole family – the trail is relatively flat, short, and free of tripping hazards. This area is free to visit, and there is a small parking lot available. This hike is one of my favorite things to do in Coupeville!

Hike at Ebey’s Landing National Historic Reserve

Whidbey Island Coupeville Ebey's Landing hike

Hiking the bluffs  and beach at Ebey’s Landing is a must when planning how to spend a weekend in Coupeville. The Ebey’s Landing Trail is one of our favorite hikes on Whidbey Island. This 3.6 mile (roundtrip) loop starts high on a bluff with sweeping views of Puget Sound, then descends to a rocky beach where you can spot unique shells and sea-polished stones. It’s a stunning blend of coastal scenery and peaceful solitude. If you’re looking for a shorter hike, I recommend the 1.6 mile Ebey’s Prairie Ridge Trail to Bluff Overlook.

These trails are part of Ebey’s Landing National Historical Reserve. This reserve protects both the natural beauty and cultural heritage of Central Whidbey Island, making it a destination for hikers, history lovers, and anyone seeking a deeper connection to the land.

Dinner on Whidbey Island: dine at Oystercatcher, or cook a locally-sourced meal at home

Whidbey Island is known for its fantastic local food scene. We recommend having dinner at Oystercatcher, or cooking a locally-sourced meal at home:

Dinner at the Oystercatcher
Whidbey Island Coupeville dinner at Oystercatcher

If you’re looking to enjoy a nice meal out I recommend the Oystercatcher, which is located just a two minute walk from Vail’s View. The Oystercatcher is a scratch kitchen that focuses on seasonal, local ingredients. The menu changes often, and is seasonally inspired. Make sure to make a reservation in advance, as this is a popular dinner location on the island.

One thing worth noting is that, although there weren’t many vegetarian options listed during our visit, the chef at Oystercatcher was more than happy to make a special dish for Gwyn. Gwyn enjoyed a stunning plate of fried green tomatoes, poblano paste, and roasted mushrooms. Amiana had their duck, which was cooked to perfection.

Pick up local provisions and cook a meal at home
Whidbey Island locally grown food and agri-tourism on the island

Whidbey Island is a haven for food lovers, with an abundance of local farms, bakers, cheesemakers, seafood harvesters, and pasta makers. To truly enjoy the island’s bounty, I recommend staying in a vacation rental where you can cook with fresh, local ingredients.

We made one of our dinners while staying on the island. See below for our top recommendations for where to get island-grown local produce on Whidbey Island

There are tons of farm stands in and around Coupeville where you pick up fresh, local produce produce and goodies. If you want more options, I recommend visiting  the Coupeville Farmers Market (Saturdays, 10 AM – 2 PM; runs seasonally). You can also stop by Three Sisters Market (open 7 days a week), which specializes in Washington-grown groceries. They have an excellent selection of island produce and artisanal goods. While you’re there, don’t miss the chance to grab a famous Whidbey Pie. We got the loganberry pie (a raspberry-blackberry hybrid) and warmed it up in the oven at our rental. Whenever we visit Whidbey Island, it’s our tradition to always pick up a Whidbey Pie! They are absolutely divine!

Finally, if you’re arriving on a Friday you can pre-order a CSA box from the Whidbey Island Food Hub. You can customize your box with seasonal produce, handmade bread, local cheese, seafood, and more. Pick it up at a designated location and use it to make a delicious meal during your stay.

Coupeville itinerary, day two: Deception Pass and exploring the local food scene

Breakfast at the Little Red Hen Bakery

Whidbey Island Coupeville - Pastries from the Little Red Hen Bakery

Start your day with pastries from Little Red Hen Bakery. We ordered their fresh-from-the oven cinnamon roll, cardamom bun, and kouign amann! Everything was still warm from the oven! You can also get coffee at the bakery, but we walked up the road for coffee from the Sunshine Drip, which is a charming coffee shop in Coupeville. Their cold brew and latte were both excellent.

Explore the trails at Deception Pass State Park

Hiking at Deception Pass State Park Whidbey Island

After breakfast, drive 30 minutes north to Deception Pass State Park. This area is known for its wild ocean currents and swirling whirlpools, which you can observe from the Deception Pass Bridge. There are a variety of hiking trails here – some short, and some long!

We hiked the North Beach to Goose Rock trail (4.4 miles round trip), which offers panoramic views and lush forest paths. We also walked across the Deception Pass Bridge and watched some boats navigate the ripping currents below! Just note that this state park charges a parking fee. They accept the Washington Discover Pass ($30 per year) or $10 day pass, which you can purchase once you arrive.

Lunch at Molka Xete in downtown Coupeville

Lunch at Molka Xete in downtown Coupeville

After a morning of hiking, head back to Coupeville for lunch at Molka Xete on Front Street. Their food is delicious, and they are well known for their fesh and authentic take on Mexican cuisine! Ami got a platter of five tacos, which were perfectly flavored and juicy. Gwyn got the sincronizada, which was like a combination of a quesadilla and burrito.

Fun fact: the building that Molka Xete is in was the setting for the botanical shop featured in Practical Magic!

Visit the Admiralty Head Lighthouse

Visit the Admiralty Head Lighthouse near Coupeville whidbey island

Located about 10 minutes south of Coupeville, spend your afternoon visiting the Admiralty Head Lighthouse at Fort Casey State Park. The easiest hike in the area is the 1.9 mile (round trip) along the Fort Casey trail. On clear days, the bluff near Fort Casey offers sweeping views of Mount Olympus, Mount Rainier, and Mount Baker in the distance. You can also explore a historic fort, complete with old gun batteries and interpretive signs that share about the area’s military past.

Travel tip: If you’re looking for other hikes to do around Whidbey Island, check out our guide to the 11 best hikes on Whidbey Island. Some will take you to ocean-front trails, while others will lead you through the Whidbey Island forests.

Enjoy a locally sourced pizza dinner at Goldie’s in Coupeville

Whidbey Island Coupeville Goldie's pizza

After a day of exploring, end your evening back in Coupeville. I recommend getting dinner at Goldie’s, which is just a 10 minute walk from the Vail’s View vacation rental.

Goldie’s is a cozy pizza shop featuring locally sourced ingredients and wood-fired cooking. Their sourdough pizzas are made with heirloom wheat grown nearby, and the pizza toppings include fire-roasted vegetables. They also serve small plates that highlight the island’s agricultural bounty. It’s a perfect spot for a relaxed, delicious evening in Coupeville!
