Hawai’i travel essentials: full Hawai’i packing list, and what to wear in Hawai‘i

You’ve booked your trip to the Island of Hawai’i and the countdown is on! Now comes the big question – what should you pack for a trip to Hawai’i?

This Hawai’i packing list walks you through everything you need for a 1-2 week trip, with a focus on versatility, comfort, and simplicity. It’s designed to help you bring all the essentials for hiking, snorkeling, and relaxing at your resort, while avoiding the stress and hassle of overpacking. Below we share our Hawai’i travel essentials, and what to wear in Hawai‘i.

Who this Hawai’i packing list is for

Before diving into the details, it’s helpful to understand who this Hawai’i packing list is best suited for. This Hawai’i packing guide is ideal for travelers who plan to spend most of their time hiking, snorkeling, and exploring, while still enjoying some downtime at their resort. It’s designed for those who want to feel put-together without sacrificing comfort.. If you don’t want to drag around heavy luggage or buy a bunch of extra items once you arrive on the Island of Hawai’i, this guide will help you strike the right balance.

My number one tip for what to pack for Hawai’i? Don’t overpack. Most resorts and hotels on the Island of Hawai’i offer laundry facilities, making it easy to rewear your favorite pieces and keep your bag light! And if you’re moving resorts/accommodations during your stay, overpacking will be a huge pain. My second biggest tip? Pack 2-3 bathing suits – they take FOREVER to dry out in the island humidity, and no one likes putting on a cold and wet bathing suit! More on that below…

A comprehensive guide to packing for a vacation to Hawai’i: Hawai’i packing essentials

Below, we’re sharing everything you need to pack for a trip to Hawai’i! Our recommendations include not only what clothing you need, but also gear and travel essentials (like a small packable cooler) that will make your trip more enjoyable.

The best luggage for a trip to Hawai’i, and Comfort essentials for long air travel

At a minimum, expect a 5-6 hour flight from the west coast. If you’re traveling from farther away, your flight will take much longer (we traveled for 17 hours from Spokane, Washington!). These essentials help make your flights much more comfortable!

What to pack for town and resort-wear in Hawai’i

The clothing you pack for resorts and around town will depend on the vibe of the hotels you’re staying at. In general, I find Hawai’i to be quite casual. However, some of the resorts we stayed at (notably, the Fairmont Orchid) are more posh, and you’ll see people in nicer ‘resort wear’. A good rule of thumb: bring at least one nicer outfit for a fancy dinner, but prioritize casual clothes that will keep you cool and comfortable. Bonus points for linen and looser fabrics that also protect your skin.

  • 9 pairs of underwear
  • 2 bras
  • 2 shorts, or one pair of shorts and one pair of pants
  • 2 short sleeve tops
  • One wrap, light jacket, or shawl for evenings and sun protection
  • A coverup that can do double duty around town
    • I’m a big fan of The Linen Maxi Dress by Andie. It’s super soft and flowy, and works equally well over swimwear and around town. Pictured in the beachwear section below!
  • 2 dresses
  • 1 UPF 50+ wide brimmed hat
  • 1 pajama set
    • I love this merino wool PJ set from Unbound Merino. The wool keeps this set smelling and feeling great even after 9 days of wear, and the material helps regulate your body temperature.

What clothing and gear to pack for hiking in Hawai’i

Hawai’i is known for its humid and often rainy conditions, so I recommend packing quick-dry clothes for hiking. Cotton (like denim) takes a long time to dry if it gets wet!

Beachwear and snorkeling packing essentials for Hawai’i

My biggest piece of advice for beachwear and snorkeling is to pack multiple swimsuits! Swimsuits can stay wet for DAYS in Hawaii due to the humidity, so having several is essential. I recommend packing three pairs just to be safe.

  • Multiple swimsuits. See below for my current favorites!
    • I love the Tulum One Piece by Andie because it has fantastic coverage without slipping, and it’s SUPER cute. I’m also a big fan of their Amalfi One Piece, which is stylish and a little sexy without being too revealing.
    • Swimsuits from Maven Thread are incredibly comfortable, and come in a range of adorable prints. I’m a big fan of their bikinis!
  • 2 rash guards – I love rash guards from Solbari because they have UPF 50+
  • 1 quick dry beach towel or beach blanket. This is optional; many resorts provide these… but it can be nice when you’re traveling between locations!
  • Waterproof phone case
  • Beach tote
  • Snorkeling fins, goggle, and snorkel set.
    • This is optional, but I think it’s gross sharing resort loaner snorkeling equipment, and I have a rubber allergy that necessitates we bring our own gear. However, they do take up a LOT of room in your bag…
  • Anti-fog, which is essential to keep your snorkel mask fog-free (use code GANDA10 for 10% off)
  • UPF 50+ sun hat

The best shoes to pack for Hawai’i

Footwear can be hard to pack since it can be so bulky. I recommend one shoe for each category of activity: hiking, resort, and water.

  • 1 pair of waterproof hiking boots or sneakers
  • 1 pair of nice sandals for resort, dinners, and town
  • 1 pair of water sandals. We brought Xero sandals pack down small, yet are perfect for beach days. Use GWYNANDAMI10 for a 10% discount.

What toiletries to pack for a trip to Hawai’i

Below are the toiletries I recommend packing for Hawai’i!

My Camera and electronics for Hawaii

I’m a photographer, so this list reflects that! My electronics were the largest and heaviest items I brought. Even if you don’t bring a camera, don’t forget to pack a power cord so you can charge your phone.

Picnic and food supplies to pack for a trip to Hawai’i

For long hiking days, or long travel days around the island, I recommend packing snacks and picnic meals in a cooler bag. This is a great way to save money, and to prevent hangry moments when you find yourself in need of a meal but far from dining options. Note that, in my experience, many dining places on the island close relatively early compared with the mainland. Plan you evenings accordingly!

  • Cooler bag. I like this 18 L cooler which packs flat and is great for daily snacks and packable lunches.
  • Ziplock bags for snacks
    • Pro tip: in addition to sandwich bags, bring gallon size bags for the ice for your cooler!
  • Packable shopping bag
  • Opinel knife, which is great for cutting up fresh fruit on the islands, and perfect for tossing in a checked bag!

Finally, don’t forget cash! We brought $300 (USD) in cash for farmers market food, food carts, and tips.
